There will be some people for whom their education was a living hell, and they wouldn't step through the doors of another school if you paid them. For others, there's a certain romance in the idea of living in a former school.
But what's the reality like? We look at five former schools that are currently on the market.
7-bedroom stunner in Hampshire: £3 million
If money is no object then Rolle House, a former school near Winchester, offers seven bedrooms, almost 27 acres of grounds, stables, a swimming pool (with a heated pool house and changing rooms) and a tennis court. The entrance hall alone is big enough to fit most London flats into. You have to assume that the only pupils that ever attended this school paid handsomely for the privilege.
Detached four-bedroom home in North Yorkshire: £625,000
The Old School has been extended to provide a large modern home with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. It has been recently renovated with a top-of-the-range kitchen and a bespoke oak staircase. Upstairs the sloping ceilings and downstairs the original stone and wooden floors provide a great reminder of the property's former life.
This Cumbrian school is being sold in the middle of being converted into a two-bedroom family home. The current owners bought it for £165,000 a year ago but work has ground to a halt. On the plus side the building offers potential for a home with plenty of character. However, you'll either have to live with the decisions the current owners have made about conversion, or start all over again.
Two-bedroom townhouse in Altrincham conversion: £330,000
If you fancy a property where all the hard work of conversion has been done for you, there's always this townhouse fashioned out of part of a larger conversion. This has some nice original features and a modern feel. However, you'll have to make your own decision about whether you like the fact the developers decided to build a floor cutting across the windows - so you get to enjoy the bottom half in the lounge and watch the top half rise out of the floor in the bedroom.
5 bedroom detached house near Cambourne: £750,000
The Old Chapel and School House in Roscraggan consists of the former chapel and a separate detached former school house. Inside the chapel are five bedrooms, three bathrooms and an incredible stained glass window. The former school house is has six more bedrooms and is currently rented out. The fittings and fixtures are hardly high-end, and the property could do with a little TLC, but if you have the time and money this could be a particularly striking home.
