A robber has used a handwritten note, which claimed he had a gun, to steal cash from a Nationwide Building Society in Wallsend, Northumbria.

Northumbria Police released CCTV footage of the man walking into the Nationwide Building Society on High Street East in Wallsend and handing a piece of paper to staff saying he had a gun.

The note requested they hand over the cash, which they did.

The note ended with a threat that if they raise the alarm, he will shoot them.

Footage shows that the man actually went into the branch twice before the robbery occurred.

The robbery happened at 1.20pm on Friday 15 March 2013.

Police have made a fresh appeal for more information to catch the thief.
