Would you pay £42,661 for some tuna? A 507-lb. bluefin tuna sold for 7.36 million yen ($70,324) in the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo on January 5th.
The gigantic fish, caught off northern Japan, received the highest price paid at the market's first tuna auction of the year.
> It was expected that the year's first tuna would fetch an extravagant sum at the celebratory auction but the Tsukiji fish market abandoned tradition and sold its first tuna to Kiyoshi Kimura, President of sushi chain Kiyomura Co. for the apparently reasonable sum of $70,000.
Although this is significantly more money than bluefin tuna usually sell for in Japan, the first tuna of the year traditionally sells for an inflated price. At last year's auction, a 489-lb. bluefin tuna sold for a $1.76 million. The winning bidder? Kiyoshi Kimura. He must be happy with this year's bargain.
