Couple enjoy £758 budget wedding thanks to Iceland

Wedding cakeA typical wedding now costs an incredible £20,000.

However, when thrifty Welsh couple Lisa and Mark Davidson, a 52-year-old electrician, got married - and held a bash for 200 guests - in July they managed to do it all for just £758. That's just £3.79 a head.

The secrets to the couple's low-cost big day included buying the wedding breakfast from budget supermarket Iceland, taking a honeymoon in a borrowed caravan in west Wales and buying fake flowers on eBay rather than shelling out for fresh bouquets.

Mrs Davidson's mother also made the wedding cake, while she borrowed a long strapless dress from her stepdaughter.

Mrs Davidson, 33, told the Daily Mail newspaper: "We've got such big families and so many friends, and couldn't bear the idea of leaving anyone out.

"And there was no question of feeding our guests sandwiches, or not bothering to decorate the room. I was determined to create a day everyone would remember."

The couple chose Iceland for the wedding food after checking out the ranges in a variety of stores. The feast included two kinds of prawns, three kinds of chicken, mini stuffed jacket potatoes and a dessert buffet.

"It wasn't just that it was cheap," said Mrs Davidson, who works as a receptionist near Pontypridd, south Wales. "They had more interesting party food than anywhere else we looked. The whole thing went down a treat. Friends can't believe how much we managed to get for how little we spent."

The Davidsons are not the only couple to keep their wedding costs down to a minimum, though.

Hollywood comedian Dax Shepard, who stars in the hit series Parenthood, recently admitted that his "world's worst" wedding to actress Kristen Bell cost just $142 (£89).
