Dramatic footage has been released by police, showing the moment that a security guard was forced to hand money over to a thief brandishing a rifle. The robbery took place last Monday at a petrol station in Ilminster, a small town in the heart of Somerset.

Police released the video in the hope of persuading witnesses to come forward.

Shocking

The video shows a security guard leaving a convenience store at a petrol station in the sleepy Somerset town. He is confronted by the masked, armed man; drops the security box and retreats into the shop.

Investigating the incident, DC Andy Tearle said: "This robbery only took a few seconds to commit but the impact this will have on the courier, shop staff and witnesses will stay with them for much longer. We are investigating the robbery and our enquiries are progressing well but we need to speak to anyone who might have any information. If you can help, please contact me." Tearle can be reached by dialling 101.

The man then climbed into a white Ford Fiesta - driven by his accomplice - and they fled the scene. They abandoned the car in the middle of the road about half a mile away on the B3168, and are thought to have got into a second car.

The Fiesta later turned out to have been an Exmoor National Park vehicle, stolen from Exford on Exmoor on 17 September. It had its number plate changed and the branding removed. The police want to speak to anyone who has seen the white Ford Fiesta since it was stolen. They have released images of the car.

They also want to speak to the driver of a green VW Polo (also pictured) which was driving along a private road on the Dillington Estate linking Whitelackington and Ashwell on the morning of the robbery.
