The world's 10 top earning supermodels revealed

What's the key to becoming one of the world's highest-paid models? Getting a gig with Victoria's Secret seems to be the answer.

Of the world's top ten earners, as compiled by Forbes magazine, no fewer than eight either work or have worked for the lingerie chain. As Forbes notes, many, too, have a substantial business empire, with clothes or cosmetics businesses on the side.

Headed by Gisele Bündchen for the seventh year running, the list includes two newcomers, Liu Wen and Joan Smalls. Meanwhile, Doutzen Kroes and Alessandra Ambrosio have slipped off the list in the last twelve months. Bubbling under are Karlie Kloss and Kate Upton, who could well make the top ten next year.

So which of the world's supermodels make the most loot from their looks? The full list is below.

The world's 10 top earning supermodels revealed

1. Gisele Bündchen

With earnings of $42 million in the year to June 2013, Gisele Bündchen is streets ahead of the competition, even though her earnings have fallen slightly from last year's $45 million. While Forbes calculates that her earnings from endorsement dropped a little over the last year, she picked up contracts for H&M, Chanel and the David Yurman jewellery firm. She also owns an eco-friendly cosmetics company, Sejaa, and a stake in high-performing Brazilian footwear firm Grendane. Gisele managed all this despite giving birth to her second child with her American footballer husband Tom Brady - whom she out-earns slightly - and isn't likely to lose her top slot any time soon.

2. Miranda Kerr

While a long way behind Gisele, Australian Miranda Kerr - aka Mrs Orlando Bloom - managed a very respectable $7.2 million during the year, well up on last year's $4 million and seventh place. The figure was boosted dramatically by earnings from her Kora Organics skincare range, as well as deals with Qantas, David Jones, Lipton and Mango. And she's very big in Asia, with endoresement deals with EMODA, Samantha Thavasa and Clear.

3. Adriana Lima

Adriana Lima perhaps best personifies the Victoria's Secret effect, as the company's longest-serving Angel - three years and counting. It's where the bulk of her $6 million earnings come from, says Forbes. But she also has some lucrative endorsement deals, with brands including Miu Miu, Donna Karan and Mavi Jeans, helping her step up one place in the list since last year.

4. Kate Moss

At the - for a model - advanced age of 39, Kate Moss is still pulling in the cash after a year that included several major campaigns and shows. She has a lucrative deal with Vogue Eyewear, as well as contracts with Rimmel and Versace. But her $5.7 million earnings have fallen substantially since last year, when she made $3.5 million more and took second place in the list.

5. Liu Wen

Liu Wen has appeared in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Estée Lauder, and last year became the first Chinese model to take part in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. New to the list, with earnings of $4.3 million, she's being tipped as one to watch - especially in China, of course.

6. Hilary Rhoda

Seven years into a deal with Estee Lauder, Hilary Rhoda also works with Ralph Lauren and Victoria's Secret. During the last year, she's signed contracts with Noke and Hugo Boss, helping her to make $4 million.

7. Carolyn Murphy

Carolyn Murphy also has a long-running arrangement with Estee Lauder, which she's represented since 2001. This year, adding Coach, Ann Taylor Loft and Carlo Pazolini to the list helped her to bring in $3.6 million - a little up on the $3.5 million she made last year, which put her in ninth place.

8. Joan Smalls

New to the Forbes list, Puerto Rican Joan Smalls made $3.5 million last year. Over the years, she's posed for Chanel, Lacoste, Calvin Klein Jeans and appeared on the covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and GQ. Over the last three years, she's appeared on the catwalk for Givenchy, and become the first Latina ambassador for Estée Lauder.

9. Candice Swanepoel

Like several others on the Forbes list, Candice Swanepoel has Victoria's Secret to thank for the bulk of her earnings. But she also has deals with Versace, Juicy Couture and Max Factor to help make up her $3.3 million earnings. And she's on the way up: last year she was in tenth place, making $3.1 million.

10. Lara Stone

Like Gisele Bündchen, Lara Stone took time out this year to have a baby with comedian husband David Walliams - possibly the reason she's fallen from eighth place last year, when she earned $3.8 million. Nevertheless, her exclusive deal with Kalvin Klein - she's modelled jeans, jewellery and accessories for the company - helped her to make $3.2 million during the year.
