Shoppers are set to spend almost £18 million an hour online on Christmas presents and other festive goods on Monday, many from work, according to a study.
The spending spree will start a week earlier than last year because people are worried about a repeat of the extreme weather which gripped the UK last December, said shopping comparison website Kelkoo.
Monday will be the busiest online shopping day of the year, with predictions that £424 million will be spent, almost £300,000 a minute.
Chris Simpson, chief marketing officer at Kelkoo, said: "With £424 million being spent in just one day, Monday will be a hugely significant day for online retailers.
"Overall, the six weeks in the run-up to Christmas will be a time for e-tailers to really boost their sales figures at the end of a challenging trading year.
"The great news is that more than £13 billion is going to be spent online during the festive season, which is an increase on last year."
Kelkoo believes there will be promotions available in November and December before the start of the traditional sale period on Boxing Day.
