The cheapest cars for young drivers to insure

Car insurance premiums are still on the rise, but are particularly tough for young drivers. According to the comparison site, car insurance for young drivers hit record highs this year, with 17-20 year-olds paying as much as four times the average amount than other driver's for motor insurance.

So which are the cheapest cars for younger drivers to insure?'s figures reveal that the average motor insurance premium, based on a 17-20 year-old male, is now £4,006 per year for comprehensive cover. AA Insurance however, put the average even higher - their figures show the average 17 year-old male pays roughly £5,000 for cover.

For some youngsters, the cost of insuring their car for a year is more expensive than the cost of the car itself.

It's little wonder then that young drivers take more time over researching the car they buy to establish the likely insurance costs. And the research provides them with a helping hand: They have looked at which new and used models are the cheapest for 17-20 year-olds to insure.
The research focused on vehicles in the £600 to £10,000 price range - and it was the ever-popular Fords which come out on top.

Many youngsters have turned to telematics technology – the black box that marks a driver's performance behind the wheel - to try and bring their insurance costs down. The theory behind them is that the better you drive - with one of the boxes fitted in the vehicle to record your journeys - the cheaper your car insurance will be.
Unfortunately, it isn't an instant fix in bringing down insurance costs and youngsters may find themselves being even harder hit. Interestingly the research also revealed the worst five cars to run if you are a youngster looking for low insurance prices.
