Thousands of trade unionists are marching in London against government cuts. Families have defied scare stories that the march will be disrupted by protesters intent on violence. The Trade Union Congress (TUC), the march organisers, expects millions to join today's march. Daily Finance will be there all day.
The Metropolitan Police have 4,500 officers on duty and the TUC has 1,000 stewards. Paul McKeever, chairman of the Police Federation, which represents rank and file bobbies, has pointed out that the police are facing cuts too.
"Those policing the march will be facing deeper cuts than those actually marching," he told The Economist.
