HomeServe, the home emergency cover and repairs firm, is offering a gas safety check (CP12) with additional boiler service for just £2.99 a month (or £35.88 a year) compared to industry alternatives which start from £69.

Make Ur Move charges £69 + VAT for a gas safety check while British Gas does it for £75. npower services your boiler including a safety check from £74.

If you are renting, you can ask your landlord for a copy of the current Gas Safety record to make sure that all gas appliances have had an annual gas safety check. Here is some more advice.

• Check for physical stability, presence and effectiveness of brackets (where appropriate)
• Investigate any evidence of unsafe operation and report to the landlord
• Issue gas safety certificate in accordance with agreed procedure
