‘Miniature’ English Bulldog Gives Mom Side-Eye After Being Told He Needs to Lose Weight

English bulldogs are known for looking like they are on the plump side simply because all of those rolls and their stubby legs. Just like people, overeating and laziness can lead to putting on extra unwanted pounds, and unfortunately for bulldog Harry, it means that he needs to go on a diet.

Harry's mom posted a video at the end of Aprill showing Harry sitting on the couch. The video's overlay says that Harry weighs a whopping 62 pounds, although he's supposed to be a miniature English bulldog which means he should only weigh 20-40 pounds! Watch what happens when mom tells Harry he needs to go on a diet - I don't think he's too happy about it!

Harry was not thrilled by the news at all...he could teach classes on how to give major side-eye! Commenters agreed that there's nothing miniature about Harry. @Robert Taylor Jr. said, "Man he aint no miniature. That's a normal English bulldog. Man's gotta eat." @RachelC0913 pointed out, "He’s closing his eyes cuz he doesn’t want to hear it!!! LOL!" and @Jeanie laughed, "The side eye while pretending to fall asleep!!!"

Why Do Dogs Give Us Side-Eye?

We all know that dogs don't know what side-eye is but it seems they're all capable of giving it to their humans at the most appropriate times...I know my dog does! So, when your dog looks at you sideways, what does it really mean?

Side-eye, also referred to as whale eye, might make us all laugh but it's an actual form of communication. It doesn't always mean they're annoyed with us; depending on their mood and what's going it, it can mean a few different things.

Another Pet Helpful article says to ask yourself these questions to determine what the side-eye means:

  • Are they are nervous or scared? They could be in an unfamiliar place or facing a scary object. They might need your help or a way out. Don’t worry, just give them a hug and a treat and they’ll be fine.

  • They are curious or interested? Maybe they saw something shiny or heard an odd noise. They might be trying to see it better or get your attention. Go ahead, play with them, or show them what it is. They’ll love it.

  • They are wary or doubtful? Perhaps they had an unpleasant experience with someone or something nearby. They might be telling you to watch out or stay away. Trust their instincts. They usually know what’s best for you!

In Harry's case, I'm going with the third one; I think he looks both wary AND doubtful!

After reading more about side-eye, I can say I've seen our dog do it in each of these situations. Once you know the body language and communication techniques dogs use, it's much easier to determine what's really going on in their little heads.
