Marshalls coming to New Albany Plaza in former Office Depot space

Sep. 20—NEW ALBANY — A new tenant in New Albany Plaza is eying an opening in a few months.

Retailer Marshalls, known for its deals on brand-name clothes, shoes and more, is remodeling the former Office Depot space at 310 New Albany Plaza.

"We anticipate that the new Marshalls store in New Albany, Indiana will open this fall (or) winter season," said Marshalls Marketing Supervisor Cassidy Kelly.

The Office Depot shuttered this past February. The plaza was also home to the Ben Franklin Crafts store, which announced its liquidation last August.

After three decades of selling fabric, holiday decorations and craft supplies in New Albany plaza, co-owner Dane Smith told the News and Tribune last year.

"I'm just thankful for having these 32 years and they've been all good years," he said. "I want to be appreciative to both my employees and all the people in the community; it's been a great thing."

Smith said factors like inflation, rising gas prices and a hefty lease price played into the decision to close the business.

Another new business popped up along New Albany's State Street corridor, with plans to open within the next week.

Derby City Pizza is slated to open on Sept. 25 at 412 Daisy Lane, in the former Rapid Fired Pizza location.

Owner Larry Davis first dipped his toes into owning restaurants in his late teens, including a location on Eastern Boulevard in Clarksville,

"I've always liked Indiana, so we are back over here," Davis told the News and Tribune last week. "We crossed the state line again. I think Derby City Pizza could be anywhere. I think where we are located can be the opening gate to Jeffersonville and up I-65. Because this could be a market we can do well at."
