Maine Coon Kittens 'Take Over' Woman's House and It's the Cutest Chaos

When I first set out to adopt a kitty, I was told by the rescue organization that they never sent single kittens to a household with no cats in them. Kittens, they said, need a companion. Well, for Australian cat breeder Janelle Wilson, there’s nothing to worry about. She’s currently caring for six adorable Maine Coon kitties, and they’ve turned her house into a constant kitten party.

Ever since her female cat, Darla, gave birth to this crew, Wilson has learned there may actually be something to the art of herding cats. The kittens are taking over, and it's total cuteness overload!

In the video, Wilson is seen calling to her cats, who come galloping into the room to play, tumble around the furniture, and stick their little, needlelike claws into her leg for attention. It’s clear she is carefully socializing these lovable fur balls to be perfect companion animals, in preparation for them to go to their forever homes.

The six kittens come in a variety of tones from black to gray (or “blue” as many breeders refer to the color) and even a few tabbies. Even though these are only a few months old, they are already the size of most adult cats, and can be expected to grow for another two or three years before reaching their full size. After all, Maine Coon males can grow up to twenty-five pounds.

Is a Maine Coon Right for You?

When most people decide to get a cat, they wait for the unofficial “Cat Distribution System” to drop on on their doorstep—sometimes, literally, such as when a homeless stray decides that you are now their person. But some folks are after specific breeds like hairless or Maine Coons and so have to keep an eye out for specialized breeders or on rescue website. And if you want a particular breed of cat, it pays to figure out what their characteristics are and if those sometimes big personalities fit into your lifestyle.

Maine Coon cats are known for their size as well as their friendly, companionable personalities. They are active, vocal, and love being around people. Sometimes they are described as a “dog in a cat suit” due to their love of play and performing tricks for their humans, as well as their unusual affinity for water.

But these traits, while desirable for a lot of people, are what make Maine Coon cats higher maintenance than other felines. They are active and can get bored easily, and they will want to spend a lot of time being entertained by you. Additionally, their luscious fur coats shed a lot and can be prone to matting (especially if they do go for a swim).

How to Kitten-Proof Your Home

If you are planning on bringing kittens like these into your house, it pays to consider their safety, as well as the well-being of your furnishings and other belongings. Little kittens are active and curious, and they love to climb. Tying up strings to blinds, putting curtains and electrical cords out the way, and making sure the floor is cleared of strings, hair ties, buttons, and other items a curious kitty might accidentally ingest are an absolute must. It’s also important to keep toilet lids and cabinets and dresser drawers closed and always, always check the dryer before using it. Kittens often look for warm, dark places to sleep, and the dryer is dangerously tempting.

But most of all, remember to enjoy this time. They grow up so fast.
