Maine Coon Breeder Shares Controversial Take on Why Adopting Isn't for Everyone

When it comes to animal breeding, no two people will have the same opinion. Some people are against breeding at all costs, but an ethical Maine Coon Cat breeder from California is hoping that she can change some minds with a new video she posted online.

The woman made a video explaining why breeding, when done ethically, should be considered a valid option.

The breeder acknowledged that she gets a lot of hate online for being a Maine Coon Cat breeder. But she has her reasons.

Her first being that she believes that "breeds that have been around for thousands of years deserve to be protected and bettered," she wrote in the video's caption. She also believes that cats should be valued "outside of their physical appearance."

"A cat's personality should fit with the household and Maine Coons have traits that fit well with most families. Getting just any cat without seeing if it's personality fits well with the owner is the reason why many cats end up being surrendered," she pointed out.

She pointed out several other reasons why one might choose to go to a breeder over a shelter, but people in the comments section were dubious. "There is no such thing as ethical breeding. Those cats have health issues due to inbreeding and besides there are so many street cats that need love," one commenter argued. "The only reason is money let’s be for real," someone else argued. "No such thing as an ethical breeder, animals are here with us not for us," another commenter pointed out.

Although there were people who saw her point. "Let’s be honest the real problem is backyard breeders and people who don’t neuter their pets," one commenter argued. "Gorgeous babies. It can get so exhausting trying to get people to understand that ethical breeding [does not equal] backyard breeding," a second person chimed in. "Nothing wrong with breeding as long as it’s ethical. Hate the stigma that all breeding is bad," a third commenter agreed.

Try Adopting First

There are a lot of reasons why one would turn to a breeder over a shelter and vice versa, but according to the ASPCA, who recently shared a statement about dog breeding, those who are looking to bring a pet home should try adopting first. However breeding isn't totally off the table.

"The ASPCA recognizes that there is a demand for purposefully bred dogs, and we know that there are dog breeders who share our vision for humane communities in which all animals are treated with respect and kindness," they wrote.

"These breeders reject the practices of commercial breeders, brokers, pet stores, auctions and others who profit from cruelty and instead plan breeding carefully, place dogs thoughtfully, and take a lifetime responsibility for the animals they have bred and for all of their offspring," they added.

The decision is entirely personal. But what is known is that every dog should be treated with love and care.
