  • The Mona Lisa has been on display in The Louvre in Paris since 1797 when it became the property of the French Republic. The portrait is thought to have been painted in the early 1500s by Leonardo da Vinci. 
  • Currently on display in the The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the painting is an oil on canvas work from 1889 by world famous Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh.
  • There are four versions of Edvard Munch's '​The Scream' painting and The National Gallery, Oslo, holds one of two painted versions. The Munch Museum and a private buyer own the other two versions of the painting. 
  • A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte was painted in 1884 and is one of Georges Seurat's most famous works of art. The painting is known for its unusual characters including a woman holding a leash with a monkey attached and a little girl in white staring directly at the viewer of the painting. 
  • Raphael was known for his involvement in the High Renaissance movement and Young Woman With Unicorn is thought to have been influenced by Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. The painting was a wedding gift from Raphael and the woman in the portrait is believed to have been the bride. 
  • The Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of the world's best known paintings and one of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's most famous works. It was donated to the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague in 1902 when it's owner, Arnoldus Andries des Tombe, passed away.

  • The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo is part of a fresco painting that adorns the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The ceiling was painted by Michelangelo over four years (1508-1512) and The Creation of Adam is one of the most replicated religious paintings of all time. 
  • Although Lowry used views of Pendlebury and Salford in the north of England for many of his works, Coming From the Mill is thought to depict a made up location that Lowry imagined. 
  • Guernica by iconic artist Pablo Picasso is a mural-sized oil canvas painting that is thought to have been painted as a response to the bombing of Guernica in northern Spain. The painting has been showcased around the world and now resides at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. 
  • The Kiss is part of Kilmt's 'Golden Period' where the artist combined oil paints and gold leaf to create opulent pictures. The Kiss is generally considered to be one of Klimt's best known and most popular works, it can now be found in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in Vienna.
