The 10 best beaches in Portugal according to TripAdvisor
  • At nearly 5km long, Praia de Falesia, near Vilamoura, is one of the longest beaches in the Algarve. This uncommercialised beach is pristine and remains crowd-free even at peak season. Any criticisms? " A bit expensive for the loungers - 16 Euros a day."
  • Famous for its golden sand and little grottos, this is a magnificent beach, perfect for snorkelling and the views from the cliffs are spectacular. Any criticisms? "There are 225 steps (I counted) which I walked in 37C..."
  • This picturesque, shell-studded beach is perfect for families and ideal for those looking for a quieter, more traditional beach than the nearby stretches at Albefeira and Vilamoura. Any criticisms? "A long walk down but well worth it when you get there."
  • This lovely fine wide sandy beach stretches from Lagos to Alvor and boasts white sand and lots of nice beach bars and restaurants. Any criticisms? " Some parts of the beach slope steeply, so waves can be a bit rough, but there are plenty of areas where the beach is flat."
  • This beach is vast so there's plenty of space, even in peak season. There are caves to explore and lots of activities to indulge in. The western end is quieter. Any criticisms? "The resort itself is a bit run down."
  • This beach featured in the 60s Bond movie On Her Majesty's Service and is widely known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. Fabulous natural scenery, mazes of dunes and the Sintra mountain range in the background make it picture-perfect.
  • Troia sits on a pretty peninsula next to the Sado River estuary, with long beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean. A free ferry boat connection runs between here and the city of Setubal. Think beautiful views, white sand, an an unspoilt environment. Any criticisms? "Avoid the restaurants on the marina. Service is slow and staff rude."
  • This dramatically beautiful stretch of coast is a must-see if you are on the Algarve, with its interesting rock formations. It provides a wonderfully secluded spot even on windy days. Any criticisms? "Not suitable for people with walking difficulties as there are around 100 steps down to the beach (and thus 100 steps back up!)"
  • Praia de Gale beach has rocky formations and caves on the eastern side, with lots of rock pools to explore, while the eastern side is more spacious and open.  Any criticisms? "Please be careful of your valuables when parking at this beach. We learned the hard way..."
  • This beach near Lagos, known as one of the 'seven marvels of Portugal', sits on an estuary and provides a haven for surfers and swimmers. It has remained a paradise for years, with no high rise hotels and not much development. Any criticisms?  "Very busy in the summer holidays... it is more populated than any other beach in the area."
