A teenager is going viral on TikTok after posting a video of herself springing into action and saving her sister's dog's life.
In the video posted on March 15 — which has 1.5 million likes and counting — Arizona native Cadence Beavers starts to perform a TikTok dance when her sister's dog MJ gets into the pool and starts to drown. Immediately, she stops what she's doing, takes off her shoes, and jumps into the pool to save her.
"I didn't know that all dogs couldn't swim so I heard the splash and I turned around and then it clicked that [MJ] was just sinking to the bottom like a rock," Beavers told In The Know. "I totally forgot I was even making a TikTok! It was just my instincts to take off my shoes and check for my phone and then jump in quickly."
Thankfully, both MJ and Beavers' belongings are completely unharmed. "I was so scared [MJ] was gonna choke on water but she was perfectly fine as soon as we got out," she said. "I'm just so glad MJ is OK and I can't believe all that happened on camera."
TikTok users are seemingly quite invested in the well-being of MJ. Currently, the video of the dog's rescue has more than 8,400 comments, most of which praise Beavers for jumping into action so quickly.
"So glad you were there [at] the right time," one user commented. "I was stressing just seeing the doggo being under for so long. Good job girl," another remarked.
Though many TikTok users have been quick to criticize Beavers for stopping to take her shoes off and make sure her phone wasn't in her pocket, she said that her No. 1 priority was getting MJ to safety. "Because I took off my shoes people think I value [material things] more than my animal's life and that's not the case."
In a follow-up video posted on March 16, MJ can be seen looking cuddly and cheerful as ever. Beavers addresses the critics in the video, saying, "Just because I took off my shoes and checked if my phone was in my pocket doesn't mean I value those things more than my animal."
