Ancient apple seeds reveal the fruit's origin

Recent studies of apple seeds have revealed the likely origin of the fruit as we know it today.

The Max Planck Institute reports, the apple holds a deep connection with the ancient silk road; and much of the genetic material for the modern apple, originated at the heart of the ancient trade route.

Archaeological finds of ancient seed across western Asia and Europe have revealed a fascinating story, of how this humble fruit came to be so popular.

Researcher Robert Spengler noted, that it was likely spread from the Tien Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan - through a combination of ancient megafauna, and later by human trade routes. This allowed the development of the different varieties of the fruit we eat today.
