Theresa May reveals food waste tip, telling ministers she scraped mould off jam and eats the rest
Theresa May has revealed her secret to reducing her own food waste when it comes to jam – scraping the mould off the top.
The Prime Minister reportedly told her Cabinet that she won't throw away a jar of jam if it's gone mouldy, instead scraping any growth off the top and eating what's left underneath.
According to the Daily Mail, the PM made the revelation during a discussion on how to reduce food waste at a Cabinet meeting.
According to the Mail, a Whitehall source said Mrs May told ministers that once the mould is taken off, the rest of the jam is "perfectly edible".
She also called for people to invoke "common sense" when it comes to throwing food away just because it's past its best before date.
According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the best before date is about quality and not safety.
The FSA's advice on its website says: "The food will be safe to eat after this date but may not be at its best. Its flavour and texture might not be as good."
