Why you really do need to wash avocados before eating them

Updated

Avocado lovers don't eat the skin of the creamy fruit so why bother cleaning the exterior before carving into one?

It turns out the skin of an avocado can play host to bacteria that can find their way into the fruit.

A recent report highlighted that listeria was found on 17% of avocado samples.

Bacteria can easily transfer from the skin to the knife which can then contaminate the inside of the fruit.
