Stop making these five mistakes with your refrigerator

Updated

It's time to open up a discussion about the five mistakes many of us make when it comes to the refrigerator. The good news? Most errors can be corrected.

Firstly, stop putting perishable items in the door! It's always being opened and closed, so the door is the warmest place in the fridge, so put items like milk and eggs on a shelf to extend their shelf life.

Foods like onions, potatoes, avocado, tomatoes, bananas, bread, peanut butter, soy sauce and hot sauce are actively made worse by tossing them in the fridge.

Make sure your fridge is between 38-42F and keep food away from cooling vents above the top shelf, so it doesn't freeze.

Another tip is to fill your fridge so cold air doesn't sink to the bottom and freeze your food.
