People stay in bad relationships for their partner, study claims

As the saying goes - breaking up is hard to do. So maybe that's why so many people stay in unhappy relationships?

Apparently not. According to a pair of recent studies, the decision to continue or end a relationship could have more to do with the partner rather than the person wanting to do the breaking up.

Published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the first study tracked over 1300 people in relationships over 10 weeks. The second study was an extension of the first study in which 500 participants thinking of breaking up were tracked over two months.

Researchers found that the more dependent people thought their partner was on the relationship, the less likely they were to initiate the breakup, revealing that some people stay in unhappy relationships purely for the sake of their partner.
