1. Samsung WF70F5E0W4W £419.99, Argos
When the Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI) recently tested the best washing machines on the market, the Samsung WF70F5E0W4W came third with a score of 86/100, beating models retailing at over £1,000.

The Samsung was praised for having "very good stain removal results across all cycles" and for being easy to use with helpful instructions. One thing the testers didn't like was the fairly lengthy cotton programs and quite high electricity consumption (10p per average cycle). It has 7KG capacity and 1400 rpm spin.

2. Panasonic NA-168VG4 £519, Amazon
The Panasonic NA-168VG4 washing machine also scored well with the GHI, coming in fifth place with a score of 85/100. The testers commented on its "very good spin efficiency for removing water from clothes" and liked how quiet it was in use (the maximum noise reading was 65.2 decibels). It features an 8kg capacity drum and a 1600 rpm spin speed.

3. Amica AWI614S £251.98 Amazon, £251.98
If your budget is limited, the Amica AWI614S might be your best choice. As the highest-scoring washing machine to be tested by GHI for under £300, it was found to deliver "pleasing stain removal results". However, if you have a large family it might not be suitable as the load is only 6kg. It has a maximum spin speed of 1400 rpm.

4. Samsung WW80H7410EW Eco bubble £649.99, Amazon
The Samsung WW80H7410EW Eco bubble performed well in Trusted Reviews' recent washing machines test. Describing its cleaning performance as "excellent" and "as good as machines twice the price," reviewers liked how easy it was to use despite having lots of useful programs. What really impressed them was the machine's efficient eco mode, which costs as little as 2.7 pence when on a 40% half load.

5. LG F1495BDA £759, Amazon
Whether you have a very large family or just want to be able to wash the duvet, the LG F1495BDA won't disappoint. Trusted Reviews rated the machine highly for its huge 12kg drum capacity (up to 60 shirts in a single load), and 30-minute and 60-minute programme options.

It's worth noting that the machine's Eco mode only saves you money on a full (up to 80%) load. Use it on a half load and it can actually cost you more. Having said that, it's reasonably cheap to run considering its size.
