Girl Famous for Overcoming Obesity Now a 13-Year-Old Athlete

Breanna Bond became famous for losing 70 pounds (5 stones) in just over a year at age 9. Now 13, she's keeping up her active lifestyle.

She recently completed a swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco during National Childhood Obesity Month in the US this September.

After her amazing weight loss, her mum has since written a book on healthy eating and exercise habits.

Heidi Bond recently talked about some of the misunderstandings about childhood obesity. She admitted she couldn't understand how her child became overweight.

"I was convinced since I wasn't overweight, and I never exercised a day in my life and I was eating the same foods that it had to be something medical," she said.

"Because I didn't understand how a kindergartner could weigh 100 pounds and a 9-year-old could weigh 186 pounds."

Strict regimen of exercise

A number of factors contribute to childhood obesity, including heredity, diet and exercise. With a strict regimen of exercise, including swimming, walking and jogging, Breanna reached her goal weight.

Heidi says she hopes her daughter can inspire other kids and serve as the role model Breanna didn't have when she first started losing weight.
