According to the Daily Mail, eBay is set to trial a 'click and collect' scheme in partnership with Argos, which could take some of the stress out of seasonal internet shopping.

The service will allow eBay shoppers to collect their parcels from more than 150 Argos stores across the UK, thereby doing away with the dreaded 'sorry we missed you' messages from the postie and the possibility that presents and parcels don't arrive in time for the big day.

Initially the service will only be available for the top 50 eBay sellers, but there will be no extra charge for the click and collect facility. And should the six-month trial is a success, eBay plans to roll out the scheme to all 735 of Argos' British stores.

The move puts the auction site in line with a number of other big names, including Amazon, who already offer the service via some newsagents, and Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda, all of whom will allow customers to collect their goodies in store.

Devin Wenig, president of eBay, said: "The distinction between offline and online shopping continues to blur. This exciting plot takes us one step nearer to our goal of offering a seamless shopping experience."

Recent figures from research group Econsultancy revealed that more than 40 per cent of British shoppers used a similar service last Christmas.
