Nude and natural
Summer is the perfect time to embrace the still popular trend for nude makeup. Use concealer and tinted moisturiser to achieve a dewy glow, with a touch of bronzer or gentle pink blush to define cheekbones, but be brave and leave lips and lashes bare. The natural look can be happily teamed with low maintenance hair - soft waves, a low-slung, slicked back ponytail, or opt for a choppy, layered cropped do.

Bold eyes
The spring and summer catwalks were awash with eye-catching peepers, and there are plenty of options for a hot daytime look or a look-at-me nighttime visage. Metallic eye shadow was one of the hottest trends of the party season, and are here to stay for summer, so even if you're not quite ready for Dior's bejewelled look, you can draw attention with a bold silver shadow or gentle golden smoky eye. But keep lips nude to balance things out if you do decide to be brave. Hair should also be kept simple, so try out a tidy ballerina bun or opt for a side parting with hair pulled loosely into a low twist, leaving a few loose strands at the front.

Glorious grunge
Go too cool for school with an easy, effortless grunge style this year and you'll be bang on trend. Eyes are all about a smudged kohl lower lash line, and for once clumped mascara is okay. Add some dark smoky shadow or a pop of colour for a more glamorous evening style. Once again, hair should be simple and carefree - go for a gentle back comb with just the front section tied back, or try out a slick wet look. If you worried about going the whole hog with the wet-looking locks, try twisting sections and adding product for that messy, bedhead appeal.

Swinging Sixties
Retro is rarely old these days and this year the Sixties are back with a bang. That means bold dark eyeliner with a defined crease line, full eyebrows and big, big lashes for a doe-eyed look. Go easy on the lip colour if you're opting for this look, however. For hair, think backcombed beehives and straight across heavy fringes for a look that can be chic daytime or swinging partytime.

Neon bright
Neon colours are set to be huge this summer - possibly the trend of the season, in fact. And if you pick just one splash of brightness for your makeup bag this year, make it pink. From fuchsia to sugary shades, it's the colour of the season. Matte, hot pink luscious lips are a winner, but the neon trend extends to eye shadow and coloured mascara too.

In the hair department, a slick side parted style is perfect for the bold-lipped look, or add volume with a root spray at the front and fashion back into a quiff, leaving the sides brushed down. Alternatively go for 1940s-inspired Hollywood waves and bold lips.
