Stand out
Stand out from the crowd in colour. Forget black, red is the colour of the season - whether you choose to go for sexy scarlet, on-trend oxblood or a deep red/purple. Team a simple dress with studded or diamante detailing with sparkling jewellery and accessories for a show stopping look. Try the Hybrid dress with stunning Bardot neckline (£85) from ASOS or Debenhams' Debut purple empire-line maxi dress (£70).

Glamorous gothic
Gothic remains a catwalk favourite this year and for the party season it's all about glamour. Rich colours, jewelled and studded embellishments will be hot on the high street, so take advantage with a short dress, like the Rare Studded Bodycon Dress from ASOS (£46), and ankle boots for a tough luxe gothic look. Alternatively, try this season's other big trend - baroque. If you've got money saved up for your party outfit, Karen Millen's Baroque Mesh Dress (pictured top, right) is a sumptuous gold-embellished black number for £210. If that's too rich for you, Oasis sell a similar baroque print jaquard dress for £75.

Flower power
Your summer dresses may be packed away for another year but floral prints have been given a winter twist too. Gorgeous midnight florals or Japanese-style prints on a black backdrop provide a dramatic look when combined with simple accessories. This particular trend is perfectly embodied in Hobbs' Invitation Antonia dress, £299 (pictured top, left) but those on a budget might prefer to try Next's Black Floral Print Dress, which comes with a price tag of £60.

Lush leather
Stepping out in leather will earn you instant style points this year and there are plenty of options hitting the shops, whether you choose a texture-mix dress (Warehouse currently stock a leather dress with lace panel detail for £120, pictured top middle), or a leather skirt with sheer top. Oxblood is one of the hottest colours to wear this winter - the Dolly Skater Dress from ASOS (£150) can be dressed up or down for evening or daytime.

Art deco decadence
If you really want to make an impact this Christmas, a little art deco elegance is the way to go. A flapper dress and 1920s-style accessories will exude fun, glamour and just a hint of decadence. This trend has been around since last year but there are plenty of pretty dresses in the shops. Both Topshop and River Island have flapper dresses on their rails this year, ranging from £150 to £175, or head to Debenhams to grab the Butterfly by Matthew Williamson dark blue embellished deco dress for the bargain price of £69.
