The hottest trend from the catwalks this autumn is shimmering gold, with the likes of Michael Kors, Paco Rabanne and Giambattista Valli setting a shining example with metallic fabrics and plenty of sequins. Deep, rich purple, dark blue and burgundy were also key colours, appearing on all the major runways.

Military styles made a return to the catwalk, with elegant, fitted designs from Burberry Prorsum, Max Mara and Salvatore Ferragamo, and both the cinched waist and cape continue to be on trend.

Similarly smart is this year's trouser suit. While last year it was all about statement skirts, this year the likes of Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel all showed off their take on the work classic, and there were also plenty of wide-trousered jumpsuits on view.

Luxurious fabrics look set to be all the rage - heavily embroidered dresses were on show from Valentino, D&G and Balmain, while gorgeous soft velvet is the perfect autumn texture, as proven by Emporio Armani and Ralph Lauren at their autumn/winter shows.

There has been plenty of leather on show too, with Michael Kors, Rodarte and Derek Lam all showcasing dresses, skirts and jackets.

On the accessories front, outerwear was oversized with sloping shoulders, while handbags went mini at Prada, Givenchy and Chloe.
