Scientists at Penn State University in Pennsylvania conducted a study on obese mice, half of which were fed EGCG, a compound found in green tea, while the remainder went without the supplement.

Even with a high fat diet, the mice gained weight considerably slower than those without the supplement, suggesting that green tea may help to control weight gain or maintain a healthy weight.

Researcher Joshua Lambert wrote in the journal Obesity: "First, EGCG reduces the ability to absorb fat and second, it enhances the ability to use fat."

He added that, though the doses given to the mice was equivalent to 10 cups in human terms, the benefits may still be seen with just a few cups each day.

Mr Lambert went on: "Human data - and there's not a lot at this point - shows that tea drinkers who only consumer one or more cups a day will see effects on body weight compared to non-consumers."

Green tea also contains powerful antioxidants that counterbalance the body's damaging free radicals.

So the next time you fancy a tea break, why not go green? It might just do you the power of good.
