In fact, three out of four Brits now shop online, spending an average of £750 a year as queues, traffic and car parking put consumers off a trip to the high street.

Grocery shopping is most popular when it comes to online spending while bargain electronics tempt many to hit the world wide web.

Online sales of clothing are also on the rise with some stores embracing technology to the full by allowing customers the option of 'virtually' trying on clothes via webcams.

The report found that £1 in every £10 spent in the UK goes to online shops and internet buying hit £25.7 billion last year - experts say that figure is likely to increase to more than £30 billion in 2011.

Overall, we Brits will spend a third of Europe's £85 billion online sales.

However, industry experts have warned that small businesses which don't have an online presence or access to secure payment systems may be forced out of business if the trend continues.

And if more and more British shoppers opt for the convenience of online shopping, what will happen to the high street?
