Alton towers
Probably the most famous of Britain's theme parks. It's the closest thing to Disneyland that these shores has to offer, complete with costumed characters and two hotels. The most famous of its stomach churning rides, Nemesis and Oblivion, offer even the steeliest of nerves a real shredding with their fiendish, sheer drop and inverted twists and turns. Try the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride and take a trip into the fantastical world of Willy Wonka.

Chessington World of Adventures
With 90 per cent of the rides suitable for children under 12 this is a definite winner for all the family. There are plenty to choose from too, including the white-knuckle Rameses Revenge. There is a zoo where you can see endangered species, a tunnel full of sharks and rays and shows with sea lions and penguins.

Legoland Windsor
This park is aimed at the younger visitor with a gentler level of entertainment than some of the other high-octane theme parks. Jungle Coaster is still quite a ride though and Pirate Falls is certainly a big splash. There are some amazing Lego models to see including replica European cities made from 35 million Lego bricks.

Flamingo land
A real must for the thrill seekers. This park boasts Europe's only triple loop rollercoaster, The Bullet. There is also the popular Top Gun ride, which gives the same high speed flying sensation as the film itself. There is also a holiday village with caravan and camping facilities.

Drayton manor
A family owned theme park that certainly packs a punch. There are over 100 rides to choose from. The headline ride is the nerve shattering Shockwave, Europe's only stand up roller coaster. There is also Stormforce 10, labelled Britain's best water ride and Maelstrom, a truly stomach churning, gyro-swing ride that will leave you amazed. Add to this the award-winning zoo and you have an exhilarating day out for all the family.

Thorpe park
This park has some rides to take your breath away. There is the fearsome Stealth with its 205 foot high rollercoaster. It boasts the fourth steepest drop in the world. It also has Europe's highest water ride, Tidal Wave. Thrill seekers can also get their fix from Colossus, Nemesis, Inferno, Slammer and Rush.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Blackpool is an old favourite with a few new tricks up its sleeve. There are plenty of sedate wooden rides for the traditionalists as well as a host of terrifying high-tech rollercoasters to test the toughest of nerves. For a start there is the heart-stopping Infusion, a dangler that loops the loop and crashes through cascading water. Then there is The Big One, once the tallest, steepest ride in the world. It may not hold the title these days but it will still give you a ride to remember.
