If you don't mind spending a bit of money, you can get expert perfume consultations to create a perfume that is tailored to you. This can cost anywhere from £40 upwards. Companies such as Guerlain offer this service, but if you prefer not to spend any money, you can check out their website for a simple online fragrance consultation.

When finding a perfume for yourself, bear in mind these tips. Test the scent by spraying it on your pulse points - behind the ears, at the throat, the nape of the neck, collar, wrists, the crook of your elbow, behind the knees and the ankles. Although some of those points might be more difficult to spray testers on in a shop than others.

There are different types of scents such as floral, fresh, spicy and warm, woody and earthy. These different types of scent appeal to different people so get to know which ones you prefer. Also bear in mind that there are different strengths of perfume available. Perfume (or parfum) is the strongest fragrance and the scent should last for about 6-8 hours, then eau de parfum which lasts between 5-7 hours, next is eau de toilette which lasts about 4-6 hours and the weakest scent is eau de cologne (aftershave) which lasts about 2-3 hours.

Remember to only test 3 or 4 scents at a time otherwise the smells will become confused and you won't know the difference between them. Also, perfumes smell differently on different people so don't buy a perfume because it smells good on someone else.
