The Edinburgh Festival is the world's biggest arts event, although technically it consists of lots of festivals that all take place about the same time in the beautiful historic city of Edinburgh. Every year thousands of musicians, actors, poets and entertainers come to the city to share their passion for the arts.

The first festival in the Edinburgh calendar is the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which takes place in June. It's an important event for the movie industry and is a mixture of old classics and fresh talent, red-carpet glamour and exciting movie premieres. In July it's the turn of the Jazz and Blues festival. Here you can check out the best international musicians as well as local Scottish talent. Top performers showcase their talents at the Jazz On A Summer's Day event or you can shake your booty at the Mardi Gras - all for free!

Throughout August there are exhibitions from all the city's galleries and museums of modern and contemporary art and a lot of these are free. Also running in August is the world famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe. At this festival you'll find theatre, comedy, dance and music at it's most eclectic, experimental and diverse. There are even swarms of buskers and street performers lining the streets of Edinburgh showing off their talents as well as the 30,000 performances that take place over the festival.

Also in August there is the Mela - which means 'gathering' in Sanskrit - which is a celebration of cultural diversity, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is a huge performance of military precision set against the impressive backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the Edinburgh International Festival which features arts such as opera, classical music and theatre, and the International Book Festival where hundreds of celebrated authors participate in over 800 events.

As you can see, there's a great deal going on at the Edinburgh Festival, are you tempted to visit this year or are you a regular attendee? Leave a comment and tell us what you think about the world's biggest arts festival.
