Little Girl Surprised With Rescue Cat Falls in Love at First Sight

Not everyone was able to grow up with a pet in the house, so it can be a dream come true when a child's family finally agrees to adopt an animal. I would know--I've been there! My family brought home our rescue cockapoo during my first week of high school, and I'll never forget how happy I felt sitting in the back seat with him on the way home. Even my then-BFF commented, "Your smile is so huge!"

Whenever I see a video of a child finally meeting the furry friend they've waited for, I can't help but get misty-eyed. Needless to say, I was reaching for the tissues after watching one amazing mom's mid-March surprise for her daughter--a rescue cat named Rufus! Everyone is all smiles after watching this girl's sweet reaction--including TikTok viewers.

Aww! This precious girl is so grateful and overjoyed to meet her new cat--I feel like I'm right in the room with her. This is as genuine of a reaction as a parent could get, and I think it's safe to say that she and Rufus are going to have a wonderful life together. Just look at the way the orange cat looks at her!

"That kitty knew he was meeting his mama," agreed commenter @itsmeimthedrama. He sure did! Rufus wasted no time hopping off of the counter to get closer to his new human, but if you think this interaction is sweet, just wait until you see this rescue cat cuddled up with the thoughtful girl.

Oh. my goodness! Could these two get any cuter? Rufus looks as comfy as can be cuddled up on her chest, but the way she whispers to her new bestie had me wiping my eyes again. There's no doubt that these two are meant for one another!

In a following TikTok video, the new cat family took a trip to the pet store to stock up on all the essentials. The outgoing, articulate girl chose only the best for her buddy, including cat food, a litter box, and the cutest food and water bowls. This mom wasn't kidding when she said her daughter had been working hard to prove she could care for a pet!

Is My Child Ready for a Pet?

If you've ever been in this mom's position, you can remember just how tricky it is to know for sure whether your child is ready to take care of a cat or dog.

Many potential pet parents start small, with something like a goldfish for their kids, to see whether they are capable of having a pet. This is a great way to practice for a higher-maintenance pet, though parents should be prepared to step in and provide care no matter the size of the animal. Even pet fish and hamsters deserve to be properly cared for!

Another way to learn whether your child is ready to take on pet care is to spend time with a friend or family member who already has a pet. Your child can interact with the pet, learn what day-to-day care looks like, and you'll be setting yourself up for a wonderful experience--just like Rufus's family!
