In a perfect world, you want to try to keep your cervical spine, i.e. the vertebrae that make up your neck, "neutral" when you sleep, physiatrist Dr. Mara Vucich of The Maryland Spine Center at Mercy Medical Center, tells Yahoo Life. Your pillow can help by supporting the natural curve of your neck, she says.
But the right amount of support for your needs depends on how you sleep. "If you're a side sleeper, you need a thick pillow to make sure you're making up the difference and not bending your neck too much while you sleep," Vucich says. Tend to snooze on your back? Vucich says you "don't need much" in the way of pillow filling —"just a little for that slight curve in the neck." Stomach sleepers also don't need too much support, Vucich says.
And, if you tend to flip back and forth from your side to your back, she suggests getting a pillow that's curved or a little sunken in the center to give you a range of support.
