Jonnie Irwin back in front of the camera amid cancer battle
Jonnie Irwin fans got back in front of the cameras as he filmed for a new project amid his cancer battle.
The A Place In The Sun star told fans last year that he had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, which has now spread to his brain. But he has been busy with projects such as renovating the house he shares with wife Jess and their three little boys - Rex, four, and twins Rafa and Cormac, three - and told fans on Instagram that he is working on something else too.
Irwin shared a picture that showed him chatting to someone as the cameras rolled, as he told fans: “Back in front of the camera - filming this morning for @mayfair_worktops at ANOTHER renovation project I’m doing. More deets later…”
Fans said it was great to see Irwin filming. “So happy you’re back filming!” one said in the comments section. “Love you Jonnie keep fighting, love to you & family.”
“In front of the camera is just where you belong,” said someone else. “So wonderful you are back filming, keep fighting Jonnie,” said another fan. “There’s no stopping you,” said another fan.
Jonnie Irwin’s cancer diagnosis
Irwin was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2020 and has said he was initially given months to live and that doctors did not expect him to see 2023.
He didn’t go public with his diagnosis until last year and has since said he kept his illness quiet at first because he didn't want to be treated differently and was worried that it could lead to him losing work.
"As soon as you say you’ve got cancer, people just write you off, people just think you are going to cark it," he said on the OneChat podcast. "I had to live with it as a secret. If I was to continue to be able to continue to provide for my family, I had to keep it a secret."
Time with family
The TV star has spoken about wanting to make the most of whatever time he has left with his wife and their sons. He regularly shares snaps of them enjoying themselves doing things such as swimming, riding bikes and having fun days out together.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain last year, he said “ now is about making memories”. “I am probably going harder on it because I know my children are so young they won't remember me,” he said.
“Pretty much guaranteed they won't remember me. But I want it at least on camera, on film to be able to, not remind them, but to show them that the early days were brilliant.”
