Great British Bake Off contestant Henry Bird has shot down rumours that there was romance in the tent after reports claimed he was dating fellow baker Alice Fevronia.

Some fans also believed he was romantically linked to another contestant, Michael Chakraverty, when Fevronia, 28, posted a photo of the pair hugging to her Instagram stories.

However, following the conclusion of the Channel 4 programme on Tuesday, Bird, 20, has commented on the speculation.

He said in an interview with The Times: "Bake Off has always thrived on people helping each other, but this year I think it truly became clear how close we all got when several tabloid reports claimed that Alice and I were in a relationship based on the photos we had been in together.

"This was news to me and to Alice’s boyfriend. These reports were swiftly followed by stories claiming that Michael and I were an item, based on a photo of us hugging.

"If a lingering hug is the qualifier for a relationship, then I dread to think what everyone thought of my farewell to Sandi [Toksvig]!"

Bird made it to the eighth week of the competition before being knocked out, while Chakraverty, 26, left the contest the week before.

Meanwhile, Fevronia made it all the way to this week's final where she was up against David Atherton and Steph Blackwell.

Despite Blackwell winning four Star Baker accolades in the series, it was ultimately Atherton who took the coveted title and cake stand.
