There's nothing like staying in a nice hotel. The sheets are always freshly pressed. There is usually great dining on site or at least close. If you're lucky you get to leave those annoying small humans who live in your house at home. Well, we have decided where we want to spend our next weekend away and it's The Park on Main hotel located in Highlands, North Carolina.

This hotel is not only dog-friendly, but they have partnered with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society to host foster dogs and one senior foster dog recently found his happily-ever-after when a guest took him home.

Live 5 News reports, "Calhoun, an 8-year-old hound dog mix rescued by the shelter as a stray last July, was the latest dog in residence when Sydney Haykel visited from Nashville, Tennessee."

Haykel took Calhoun to her room and took him on a walk, and when she couldn't stop thinking about him she made arrangements with the shelter to adopt him.

The article also states that animal shelter staff says the hotel’s decision to foster dogs has led to 25 to 30 adoptions over the years.I think if I checked into this hotel and they had a foster dog I would never want to leave!

The fact that Calhoun is a senior dog makes this entire thing that more special too, because senior dogs have a harder time getting adopted than puppies. But there are so many wonderful reasons to give an older pup a home!

Why You Should Adopt a Senior Pup

Senior dogs deserve to live out their golden years before they cross the rainbow bridge in a home full of all the love and care they deserve. Many dogs don't do well in shelters, and a dog who has lived all their life with one owner only to be surrendered may have a more difficult time with kennel stress.

Adopting a senior dog means you will be freeing up kennel space for another deserving pet to find a home. Finally, senior dogs are so loving and grateful and have a lot of life left to live. If you are interested in adopting a senior dog, please check with your local animal shelter or humane society.

Congratulations to Calhoun and his new owner. What a beautiful happy ending and pretty much the best souvenir you could ever ask for.
