German Shepherd’s Refusal to Go to Bed Is Just Like a Human Kid

Why is it that sleeping on the couch is some of the best sleep that you can get? And being woken up when you're sleeping on the couch is just the worst! Dog Life with Brett shared a video on Tuesday, April 23rd of one dog dad's attempt to get his German Shepherd Mya off of their new couch and into bed, but she wasn't having it!

The video starts with Brett asking Mya why she is on the couch and not in bed. The other dog comes out to investigate and isn't much help in persuading the dog to get off of the couch. Brett attempts some gentle nudges to get her to move, but it's clear that she knows he can't move her if she doesn't want to. Will she finally get up and go to bed? Watch to find out!

Finally! Mya got so tired of Brett's harassment that she decided it was just easier to get up and go! Commenters got a kick out of Brett's useless attempts, too. @alexander.jebson pointed out, "She, in fact, did not want to give it a little scooch LOL!" and @Angie added, "She had to stake her claim!" @Draco laughed, "She's thinking about her life choices lol!", and @Gina & Hatchet were spot on when they said, "Bet if you went to the bathroom she’d follow haha!"

Do German Shepherds Make Good Pets?

German Shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds around and known for being protective guard dogs. They are also used by law enforcement as K-9s. Do they make good family pets? As with any breed you're considering, it really depends on what you're looking for and what traits might make you say no way.

German Shepherds are one of the most intelligent dog breeds. Reader's Digest ranked the top smartest breeds earlier this month and the German Shepherd came in at #3.  They say, "The breed was bred for its high intelligence, high level of focus, desire and ability to be obedient (which makes training easy) and a protective instinct with regard to its fellow “pack” members."

These dogs quickly learn new tricks (they can learn a new command on the first go, according to the AKC) and excel at problem solving...this can be a good and a bad thing for pet owners...some say these dogs are too smart for their own good! They love learning and pleasing their humans and enjoy mental stimulation. They’re emotionally intelligent and can even pick up on their humans' feelings. And they'll protect their family at all costs; they are fiercely loyal and loving with them.

German Shepherds were bred to be working dogs and require a lot of exercise. They like to stay busy, and if they get bored, they will become destructive. This may not be a con for some families, but for some it might make choosing this breed a resounding no.  They tend to shed a lot, all year round, making every day vacuuming a must. They can also be aggressive with other animals. And unfortunately, they also are known for having a lot of health problems.

With any dog breed you might be considering as a pet, it's important to do your own research and learn about the pros and cons of owning a certain breed. Bringing home a dog just because it's attractive without knowing anything about the breed can lead to unhappy owners and an unhappy dog.
