Funny Chicken Insists on Being Carried to Coop Each Night Like the Queen She Is

Aren't there some nights when you could just...drop? Well that's pretty much every night for a chicken named Dot. The spotted bird doesn't go to sleep in her coop like the other girls. Instead she has a very special bedtime routine — one that we're sure her owner wished she did without every now and then.

Dot isn't a regular chicken, she's a queen amongst hens. Just take a look at the regal way she goes to sleep every night.

Looking at her beautiful spotted feathers, we can see why Dot gets special treatment. As her owner explained in the video, the rest of their chickens aren't as picky as Dot is.

"Every evening the chickens put themselves to 'bed' in the coop," they explained in the video's text overlay. Meanwhile Dot heads to the back porch and waits for her dad to carry her in.

"Goodnight Queen Dorothy!" her mom joked in the video's caption.

Everyone in the comments section was cracking up over the royal treatment Dot receives. "She’s trained him well," teased one person. "Dot's a celebrity," someone else added. "That was me at my desk today after 10 hours and still had more meetings!" kidded another commenter. "My mom had a rooster named Dumpling. He went to sleep on top of a ladder on the porch every night 'til Mama put him in his coop!" one commenter shared.

Do Chickens Sleep?

Pretty much every animal needs to rest, including chickens! Yes, these birds do need their beauty sleep. They call it roosting and most chickens will likely put themselves to bed around dusk. That's because chickens have bad eyesight and can't really see throughout the night. So they head in early to keep themselves safe.

Chickens often like to sleep in groups. They'll huddle together for warmth and security during the night. It's actually pretty cute. Amazingly, chickens also sleep with one eye open. They keep one eye open for predators while the other eye rests. This is possible because each eye is connected to the opposite side of the brain. So when the left eye is sleeping, the right eye can stay alert.

Another cool thing about chickens is that they also experience REM sleep [Rapid Eye Movement] just like humans. It's not clear if chickens dream, but they do twitch and make noises, which means it might be possible. Chickens will usually settle in for the night at dusk and rise at dawn. They typically get eight hours of sleep — just like us!

Their easy sleep schedule is probably why so many people love keeping chickens as pets. Unless your bird is like Dot, in which case bedtime might be a royal pain in the bottom.
