The BBC's critically acclaimed Wolf Hall is set to return with a second and final season, which will adapt Hilary Mantel's third Wolf Hall book The Mirror and the Light and will be named after it.

A beloved historical drama, the series follows the intricate narrative set out by the late author about the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell, who was minister to King Henry VIII.

Who will star in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light?

The final season of Wolf Hall will mark the return of Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell, who portrayed the character in the first season of the show. The first season adapted Mantel's books Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies.

Damian Lewis will also return to play King Henry VIII, and Jonathan Pryce will also return as Cardinal Wolsey. Other returning cast members include Kate Phillips as Henry VIII's third wife Jane Seymour, while Lilit Lesser will once again play Princess Mary.

New cast members will be revealed by the BBC in due course.

What is the plot of Wolf Hall season 2?

Wolf Hall's second season adapts Mantel's The Mirror and the Light, which charts the final years of Thomas Cromwell's life from 1536 until his death in 1540.

The story will begin in May 1536, shortly after the death of Anne Boleyn, and will follow Cromwell as he emerges from the bloody aftermath with renewed ambition to attain great power and wealth.

In the meantime, the series will also follow Henry VIII as he begins his new relationship with Jane Seymour, and the short-lived happiness it gives him.

Unrest is rife in England, though, with rebellions rising at home and traitors plotting abroad to take things from Henry, testing his patience and Cromwell's ambitions to breaking point — but how long until the King's advisor becomes a target himself?
