If you’re looking for a big brand TV that combines pin-sharp 4K HDR picture quality with a well-stocked app larder, this 50-inch Toshiba should be high on your short list.

Currently basking in a £70 saving at Currys PC World, it offers an astonishing amount of technology for the cash.

It's not only a big 4k screen, but it also comes with Dolby Vision HDR. Translated: when you watch a Dolby Vision show on Netflix the TV automatically optimises the picture for quality - bright picture highlights ping out, without compromising contrast or colour.

Dolby Vision makes TV shows like Shadow & Bone look genuinely cinematic.

The 50-inch TV also features Toshiba’s own image processing suite, in the form of its TRU picture engine. This does a solid job upscaling non-4k content to look detail-rich on this pixel-dense UHD screen.

Why we love it

This Toshiba has a Google-powered smart platform (which I guess technically makes it a Googlebox), and offers a comprehensive selection of catch-up TV services (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5) and streaming apps. It works with Google Assistant, so it’ll respond to basic voice commands and support Chromecasting from compatible Android smartphones, which is a great way to share photos.

Design-wise, the set is just as slick, with an ultra-thin bezel and steady feet.

If you’re thinking 50-inches is just too big for your living room, you’ll find it probably takes up less space than the older, smaller, bulkier TV it’s replacing. Good news for movie lovers and sports enthusiasts who want to go larger.

It’s a rule of thumb that thin flatscreens have correspondingly thin sound, which in turn necessitates budgeting for a soundbar to beef things up. That’s probably still the case here, but it must be said this Tosh sounds better than you might expect.

That’s because the 20w sound system comes from Hi-Fi brand Onkyo, and has appreciable volume.

All things considered, this Toshiba 50-inch 4k TV is something to shout about.

What the reviews say:
