The Queen privately owns Sandringham House and its vast surrounding estate, which includes 16,000 acres of farmland, 3,500 acres of woodland and 150 properties. Philip took on overall responsibility for the management of the estate at the start of the Queen�s reign in 1952. He concentrated on maintaining it for future generations, ensuring conservation was at the heart of the way it was run. Philip joined the Navy after leaving school and in May 1939 enrolled at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, where he was singled out as best cadet. He rose rapidly through the ranks, earning promotion after promotion, but his life was to take a very different course. The duke�s flourishing naval career came to a premature end in 1951.
