Rachel Riley started potty training her daughter very early in order to cut down on the use of disposable nappies.

The Countdown maths expert gave birth to Maven in December 2019 and told The Sun she got started on stamping out nappies when she was just three months old.

“We started potty training Mave when she was really teeny tiny," Riley revealed.

“We saved loads of money, and loads of plastic too. And we use cloth nappies — when you’ve got a baby, you’re doing more washing anyway.”

Riley said she plans to deploy the same strategy when she gives birth to her second child with husband Pasha Kovalev later this year.

Riley revealed her quest to improve her carbon footprint is also transferring to Countdown, with "every aspect of the show and how we make it" being examined to improve its green credentials.

She confessed that it's "small things" which are being changed, but she's keen to do her bit.

It's not the only thing changing on Countdown, of course, with Anne Robinson stepping into the shoes of Nick Hewer as the new host of the long-running letters and numbers quiz show.

With Robinson joining Riley and dictionary corner stalwart Susie Dent, the show now has an all-female presenting team for the first time.

Riley separated from first husband Jamie Gilbert in November 2013 and shortly after began dating Kovalev, who was her dance partner on Strictly Come Dancing that year.

They married in Las Vegas in June 2019, shortly after Riley had announced her pregnancy.
