‘Naked and Afraid’ contestant gets stitches in his private parts, stays in the game

On Naked and Afraid XL Sunday, we caught up with survivalist E.J., who found out firsthand last week just how dangerous that whole naked part of the show’s title can be. After falling off a tree branch and into the swamp, he sustained an injury to a rather sensitive area. And let’s just say, it was pretty nuts.

It turns out, E.J. suffered multiple lacerations to his scrotum, and was given the option by the show’s medical staff of tapping out of the competition and getting stitched up at a sterile hospital, or staying in the game and having the stitches done right then and there. And despite the serious risk of infection possibly leading to loss of genitalia or even death, E.J. chose to stay in the game and was given a total of eight stitches. Unfortunately, he was ordered to stay out of the water and to take it easy for seven to 10 days so he didn’t disrupt the stitches, a tall task for someone trying to hunt and survive in a swampy area.

So on Sunday’s episode, the injury was still very much a concern for E.J., who was doing his best to take it easy. Luckily, fellow contestants Max and Gary found their way to E.J.’s camp and teamed up with the savvy veteran, helping him with much of the heavy lifting required for survival. Plus, E.J. had the perfect conversation starter when they arrived.

“I also almost chopped my balls off yesterday,” E.J. said, lifting up his loincloth.

The medical staff came once again to check on his stitches and make sure there was no infection, and E.J. was given the green light to keep going. And it’s that will E.J. has shown to continue with the challenge that has definitely impressed his fellow survivalists.

“The guy's out here and he's busted his balls wide open and he stayed out here,” Gary said. “I mean, this is the type of man he is, this is the type of survivalist he is. And I am honored and privileged to be out here with E.J.”

Naked and Afraid XL airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Discovery.
