Amazon is keen to get toes tapping this month with its original output, bringing not one but two musicals to audiences just as the warmth of summer begins to fade. Both Kay Cannon's new take on Cinderella and the movie adaptation of stage musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie were heading for the big screen before COVID-19 reared its ugly head, but now each film is set to be available on the small screen.
Elsewhere, there's the latest run of a documentary looking at French football team Paris Saint Germain and a docuseries focusing on a very modern form of business model.
On the archive movie front, comedy sequels like Ted 2 are brushing up against prestige, Oscar-winning dramas like 12 Years a Slave.

New movies coming to Amazon Prime Video in September
Cinderella (3 September)
Pop star Camilla Cabello makes her movie debut in the latest big screen take on the classic fairy tale Cinderella. Combining original music with renditions of pop hits past and present, the movie — written and directed by Blockers and Pitch Perfect scribe Kay Cannon — presents a sideways slant on the story with a more modern attitude to gender politics.
The cast is enviable and packed with star talent, including Pierce Brosnan as the leader of the movie's unspecified kingdom and British comedians James Acaster and Romesh Ranganathan joining the omnipresent James Corden to voice a trio of mice. There's also Broadway and Frozen star Idina Menzel playing the Wicked Stepmother, and singing Madonna in the process.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (17 September)
One of the most popular productions in London's West End over the last few years, Everybody's Talking About Jamie follows the title character as he attempts to pursue a career as a drag queen in Sheffield. Screen newcomer Max Harwood plays the role in this movie adaptation, with Richard E. Grant having the time of his life as Jamie's drag mentor Loco Chanelle.
The show is an exuberant and colourful journey through an uplifting tale with dashes of real emotional turmoil. All of the signs are there that director Jonathan Butterell — who previously directed the show as well — has managed to mimic that energy with the film.
The Mad Women's Ball (17 September)
Mélanie Laurent, who appeared earlier this year in the tense Netflix thriller Oxygen, takes centre stage in this new movie, in which she serves as director, writer and lead actor. The Mad Women's Ball stars Lou de Laâge as 19th century woman Eugénie, who discovers she has the power to heal the dead. This ability gets her sent to a hospital for women affected by hysteria, where she crosses paths with a nurse, played by Laurent.
The movie is due to arrive on Amazon shortly after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Birds of Paradise (24 September)
American filmmaker Sarah Adina Smith returns to the big screen after helming the TV adaptation of the movie Hanna with this tale of dance rivalry. Kristine Froseth and Booksmart star Diana Silvers play a pair of ballet prodigies who find themselves battling for the same spot at a prestigious school in Paris. The premise obviously evokes the brilliant Black Swan, so it will be interesting to see whether this film dips its toe into the same sort of darkness.
New TV coming to Amazon Prime Video in September
LuLaRich (10 September)
This four-part documentary explores the notorious American multi-level marketing company LuLaRoe, which became well-known for its bold, colourful leggings. With the series coming from the people behind documentary Fyre Fraud, it's unsurprising to note that the documentary follows the unravelling of another very modern business failure.
PSG: City of Light, 50 Years of Legend (10 September)
Paris Saint Germain is one of the biggest football teams in the world. They just signed Lionel Messi, for goodness sake. The team has been followed for a second series of this documentary, which marks the club's 50th anniversary. As well as following some of the action of the last two football seasons, it features interviews with some of the club's most famous former stars, including David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ronaldinho.
Voltaire High (10 September)
This eight-part French comedy-drama is set at a school in the 1960s which, after years of only allowing men to study there, is open to women as well. Released earlier this year in France, the series is now set to be available to British Amazon subscribers, providing a unique slice of European period comedy.
Back to the Rafters (17 September)
Family sitcom Packed to the Rafters aired on Australian telly from 2008 until 2013 and now, with Amazon behind it, the show has been revamped for sequel series Back to the Rafters. Most of the original cast members return, with different dynamics now set up within the family, creating the potential for plenty of new drama.
Goliath S4 (24 September)
Billy Bob Thornton reprises his lead role as lawyer Billy McBride in this final run of the legal thriller series created by Big Little Lies head honcho David E. Kelley. This series sees McBride and partner Patty (Nina Arianda) try to take on the opioid crisis in America. Thornton won a Golden Globe for the show's first season, so there's plenty of prestige at play.
