Don't sleep with your hair down – that's the top tip from Queer Eye star and hair guru Jonathan Van Ness.

If you want luscious-looking locks every morning Van Ness advises tying it in a loose top knot with a silk scrunchie to stop it rubbing between your body and the pillow.

He told Hello! Magazine: "Don't sleep with your hair down. Put it into a loose top knot, because otherwise it gets stuck between your body and the pillow and rubs for eight hours a night – that's not good. Gather your hair on top of your head and loosely twist it into a top bun and secure with a silk scrunchie.

"I emphasise the term 'loosely' because you don't want to put too much tension on the hair – that can cause breakage. Silk pillowcases are also really helpful and will set you up for success."

Van Ness, the founder of JVN Hair, was in the UK to launch his products at Space NK.

The high-profile hairdresser is best-known as the grooming expert on cult Netflix show Queer Eye.

Fans lap up his expert hair tips. In the past Jonathan has said that greasy roots can be a good thing.

"Your hair likes it; your hair likes the oil that your scalp produces," he told the Toronto Star.

With this in mind, sometimes a day or two after washing his hair, when the roots start getting a bit greasy, he’ll grab a hair dryer and blow-dry that sebum into his lengths, rather than cancelling the oil with a dry shampoo.

“It makes the texture so much nicer and also makes the hair shinier, especially if you have hair that’s dryer,” he explains.

Van Ness also advises against using shampoos that contain sulphates as these strip the hair of natural oils.

He recommends we should read the ingredients on our shampoo bottles before we buy. "Ingredients are listed in the order of how much the product contains," he told Cosmopolitan magazine.

"If the first ingredient is alcohol, or some type of word you can’t pronounce, it’s not looking good. Parabens are another ingredient that has been shown to be not cute for us, so I steer clear of those too."

No wonder his flowing locks always looks red-carpet ready.
