Janelle Monae comes out as non-binary

Janelle Monae has come out as non-binary on the latest edition of Jada Pinkett-Smith's Red Table Talk.

The musician and actor also confirmed that she will continue to use she/her pronouns.

Speaking about her non-binary identity, Monae said: "I just don’t see myself as a woman, or solely."

She also explained how she came to understand her identity: "I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the 'he' or the 'she'. And if I am from God, I am everything."

Monae also said: "But I will always, always stand with women, I will always stand with Black women, but I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary."

Jada Pinkett-Smith said that Monae's statement on her identity was "beautiful" while her daughter Willow asked the Yoga singer why she has decided to come out publicly.

Monae responded by saying: "You know, somebody said, 'If you don’t work out the things that you need to work out first, before you share it with the world, then you’ll be working it out with the world.' That’s what I didn’t want to do.

"I thought I needed to have all my answers correct, and I don’t want to say the wrong thing and also I hadn’t had the necessary conversations with my family. I wasn’t ready to have my family question my personal life or get calls from people that still look at me as Little Pumpkin."

Monae also explained how her sister already knew of her identity while her mother had "lots of questions" but that her father fine with it.

Monae has previously hinted at identifying as non-binary by tweeting in 2020: "#IAmNonbinary"

The Moonlight and Hidden Figures actor has also previously come out as queer and pansexual.
