James Corden has said it would be a "shame" if there were no further episodes of Gavin and Stacey.

The TV host, who co-writes the programme with Ruth Jones, has said in a new interview that while there are "no plans" for another instalment of the much-loved comedy it cannot be ruled out in the future.

The record-breaking Christmas special in 2019 ended on a cliffhanger as Jones' Nessa character proposed to Corden's Smithy, but viewers didn't hear his answer.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, the 42-year-old said: “As it stands right now, there aren’t any plans to do one, but that’s not to say that there isn’t the want or the inclination to do one… that special ends on such a… it’s so open-ended that I think it would be a shame to leave it there.

“That’s certainly my feeling, and I think Ruth feels the same. It doesn’t feel like the end of a book, it feels like the end of a chapter, so I do feel like if we ever did another one that would be the end of it.

“But, with the last one… that’s why we wrote it without telling anyone. We’d finished it before we called the BBC because we just didn’t want to make anything that would in any way let everybody down."

He added that he felt a similar process would happen with any future episodes, but that they "haven't had a single conversation about it".

Corden also addressed the logistical difficulties as he is located in Los Angeles while Jones resides in the UK. He remarked the pair "can't write separately".

Rob Brydon, who played Uncle Bryn, also recently spoke out about the show as he said it would "seem strange" if the Christmas cliffhanger wasn't resolved.
