Holly Willoughby was left blushing after revealing live on TV that she thought corn-on-the-cob grew underground like carrots.

The 40-year-old This Morning presenter left co-host Phillip Schofield in hysterics after she confessed during a gardening segment on the ITV show that she has been digging up her sweetcorn plants to look for the cobs.

Willoughby said: "I've got some good looking corn-on-the-cob - I mean the green sprouts coming out on the top, don't know what's happening underneath.

Co-host Schofield, 59, looked bemused as he told her: "Corn-on-the-cob grows off the plant though, not underneath it."

Willoughby exclaimed: "Does it?!" to the sound of laughter off camera from the studio floor.

She then laughed: "I'm looking in the wrong place! I thought it was like a carrot!"

Schofield and gardening expert Daisy Payne were both left in fits of laughter over Willoughby's blunder.

Schofield continued to tease her about it during the course of the show - bringing up sweetcorn during a section of the show on cooking pasta bake.

He said: "If you're wondering why am I being mean to Holly and brining it up again, last week when we were doing vegan food I mistook real meat for meat substitute and she never let me hear the end of it."

Willoughby has a sizeable garden at the five-bedroom house in west London she shares with her TV production company boss husband Dan Baldwin and their three children and, like many others, she got into gardening during the 2020 lockdown.
